American Cars Exempt from Japan’s Cash-For-Clunkers Program?

US Automakers are outraged by Japan’s version of the Cash-for-clunkers program, which allows the Japanese to scrap their 13-or-older car for a new 2010 model, provided it meets new fuel efficiency requirements. The problem? All US-built cars are exempt from the program, and most other cars imported to Japan as well.

I don’t know why anyone’s surprised, since here in the US, many of the old Chevy Suburbans and Ford Explorers traded in under the program were traded in for Japanese cars, and had the US government mandated that we trade our cars for American-made vehicles, the big 2.5 would probably have a vastly-improved market position. But when you’re choosing between an Ave0 and a Fit, it’s really not a choice at all. [Source: Autospies]
