After we posted our 2011 Mustang GT review and the subsequent Mustang GT vs. Camaro SS Drag Race video, we got lots of comments that the race was unfair, or that we drove the wrong Camaro. You see, that particular Camaro was an automatic, which means that instead of the 426 horsepower LS3 engine underhood, it only had a 400 horsepower. This is neither our fault nor Ford’s, however in the interest of satisfying our viewers, we took a 2010 Camaro SS, this time with a stick, to the track. We ran some hot laps to find out if these Chevy fanboys are on to something, or if the Camaro is all style and no substance. Of course, we also ran some hot laps to see if the Camaro’s 226 horsepower advantage is enough to take our Time Attack crown from the current leader, the 2010 Volkswagen GTI. Video review after the jump.

Nice video ! But I would like it if there was a little more time before Matt starts speaking (this is an editing issue). Now you click play and instantly Matt begins talking, so I have to listen again. Maybe it's just me though.
The intro we filmed just went too long, and we didn't have enough extra shots to do a voiceover bit, so we just cut it where we wanted it to start. Just happens sometimes.
Camaro SS vs. 370z.
Daliy driver, and tear up the back roads. Possibly see a track every once in a while
What a sad review of the 2010 Camaro SS… The truth hurts because there was so much hype about this vehicle… It would be nice to see these cars on a larger course where you could get out of second gear. Nice to see a review that isn't kissing the automakers butt…
Good review, I had a 4th Gen Camaro and while nostalgic I've got to agree with the sentiment regarding the new car's ubiquity. I'm really interested to see what GM does in the next model year or two with the existing Camaro. They know that the Mustang is beating them in the interior category and now has comparable power. Let's see what they come up with as a mid run update.
Great review and unbiased which is how it should be. If a car sucks I want to know about it. It may be pretty, but a dog is a dog.
I'm not too keen on the comments about the styling, but to each their own. I, for one, think the car looks fantastic, and I snap my head around EVERY time I see one. I think it looks absolutely incredible. The problem is, when a car becomes so popular that everyone has one, *ANY* car will lose its edge in styling. Especially when its the first year out, and with not a lot of customization/personalization parts out there for the car, etc.
I owned a 3rd gen LT. 6-Cyl 2.8L 5 speed. I absolutely loved the looks of that car. I still do, and I still snap my head and smile when I see the same gen. As a matter of fact, I was checking out a 1st gen lime green Camaro just today. I would have asked the woman driver the exact year and what she has under the hood, (Sounded like an automatic 6 as she wasn't hard on the gas) but we never got window to window at the same point for me to really ask. There is something about the styling they've done with all gens of Camaros that just erects a certain mood. Pun intended.
The thing I LIKE about the plastic is that its easier to keep clean, and isn't as prone to shrinkage as that other kind of plastic they wrap things with. The horn in my current daily driver is fubared because the plastic covering over the airbag shrank and now the horn is on all the time. I gotta get a damned new air bag system to fix my horn!!! Lame. How many vents don't stay seated up in the dash BECAUSE the dash board plastic wrap warps and the plastic vent caps pop? My 3rd gen did, and it was damned annoying. I admit that I'm not entirely an aesthetics kind of man, but to me, how the interior looks versus what the interior is made of, how it looks is more important to me.
Lmfao.. I loved this review. Thank you Matt, this is exactly what I was waiting for… Lol.
In all honesty, would you rather have a F body camaro with the same amount of power or this transformer crap?
The only real nice thing I can say about the new camaro is it's worlds better than the F-body cars. I looked at one, a 1997 Trans-Am when I was deciding between that or a 1994 Mustang GT. I didn't even drive the Trans-Am. Sat in it for about 10 seconds, and the interior was such a horrible pile of crap I never even considered driving or buying it.
Lol.. They're both terrible in any case.
In other news, why were you looking for a 94 GT? is that how you found the one on ebay in mint condition? Lol.
I myself actually have been thinking about getting a mustang, dunno what year to go with though.. ideally I'd like a terminator 03-04 but they're still quite expensive, relatively speaking. I want something cheap and fast..
I mean, this was in 1998 and I was 18 years old. I wanted the 94 GT because it was the "new" bodystyle with the very moddable 5.0L engine.
Honestly, why ohh why cant GM get an interior right? I have a 2004 Z06 and I love it. But the seats are terrible and there is plastic evreywhere. What have they learned? Nothing. Look at the new fords, great!, …even the trucks for chriissakes! Matt you know!
Funny thing is, at the time the Z06 was being advertised, GM was saying how improved their quality was and how much better their interiors were…Fastforeword 7 Yrs….same old same old. Sure , better than GM interiors used to be…(not saying much)…and still not up to par with the cheapest KIA. Plastic just looks, feels, and is cheap…get it straight GM, your (potential) consumers are not as stupid as you assume. Guess thats why im buying a new FORD!
P.S. there is also the distinct possibility that I do not have a mullet.
I heard that the camaro from the Transformers movie is not the same car that GM is selling to the public. and when i looked at the movie, they indeed do look different. is that true or is it just a myth and an optical illusion?
Bumblebee in the movie is the Camaro concept car, not a production Camaro.
I've actually seen the cars used for filming, they were just 05/06 GTOs with fiberglass reproductions of the concept car's body panels (or Monaro if you are an Aussie). So by default they had better interiors
… I miss my goat
Well good review liked how it sounded when you were pushing it. You did seem like you enjoyed it so I might at least rent just to try the car out for myself. Thanks.
1. Should have made a comment about the trunk.
2. Should have driven it ANYWHERE other than on a go-cart track.
But overall it was a quality review as usual. Good work, keep doing what your doing.
1) The trunk is big enough, but has a tiny opening so you can't actually fit anything big in there. and 2) We test lots of cars on that track to compare their behavior under the same conditions. We're a small show, so we have a small track. When we're a big show with big money, we'll upgrade to a big track. I did also drive it on the road for a full 7 days before doing this review, so it's not like the Kart track was the only experience I had with it.
Maybe we could get you on the new american version of top gear instead of those three guys.
