2011 Mustang GT 5.0 vs. 2010 Camaro SS Drag Race

OF COURSE we were going to show the whole drag race. Here it is. Clearly, the Mustang slaughters the Camaro in a 1/8 mile drag race on a runway. The drivers were two Ford engineers, and for those of you who think the Camaro driver sandbagged, he was a former pro racer who cut a .001 light. The Mustang driver cut a .008 light. Happy Easter!

For the serious performance modder, AmericanMuscle has a great selection of Mustang heads to take your Stang to the next level.

Did the mustang actually feel that much quicker than the last ss you drove?

LOL So called pro drivers driving automatics in a 1/8 drag race? Could these be anymore stupid? Come on now, lets see what the new 2011 5.0 Mustang can do against the LS3 motor in the Camaro SS.

    • smokingtire says:

Everyone's a critic from the sidelines.

      1) All we had at the time of filming was an Automatic Camaro, because that's what you can get from a rental company. Chevy would never loan us one for a race, knowing full well it would get its ass handed to it, so we rented one. Also, by racing automatics, we can virtually eliminate "driver error" from the equation, which we can further cover by using professional drivers. The Camaro driver cut a .001 light, the Mustang an .008. Only someone very lucky, or a pro, could cut consistent lights like that. And we only had access to a 1/8 mile track that day. Given how hard the Mustang was pulling on the Camaro at the finish, a 1/4 mile race would have been a total slaughter.

      2) Motor Trend already raced the stick Mustang vs. stick Camaro, and, totally unsurprisingly, the Mustang beat the Camaro by a mile.

We like constructive criticism, but you're criticizing a totally fair race where nearly all "driver error" factors have been eliminated. It doesn't get much more fair than that.

Prediction- 2011 5.0 mustang will run 1/4 ets in the 11s N/A and the valve covers don't come off- for under 2,000 dollars.

  11. Corvette guy says:

Stock for stock they are so close it doesn’t matter. The only thing the Mustang has over the Camaro (in terms of drag racing) is the solid axle. Given the fact that both run 12.7-12.8 means you are splitting hairs. Also, in a world of “modifications” just because you are faster stock doesn’t mean anything when modifications are available. We can bicker (and always will) about who is faster and who is better but here is the real deal here. Both cars are quick, handle well, and look great. Issue is that both of them have subpar interiors and still lack that quality that you get with the European entries. For the money though they are fantastic automobiles and for me, this decision, is a great one to have the opportunity to make. I feel pretty lucky to be able to pick between these two brutes. If that is the hardest decision to make than we have it pretty easy in my opinion.
These cars are hybrids. They burn gas and rubber!

    • smokingtire says:

You make excellent points, although I would disagree somewhat about the subpar interiors. If you get a Mustang with some options on it, like leather, etc, the interior's build quality is just one small step below Audi or BMW's entry-level interiors, and, in our opinion, better than Mercedes's C-class interior.

  12. mark dellacqua says:

Corvette Guy, your leather racing gloves are too tight, cerebral perfussion is diminished. The Mustang runs 12.7 and the Camaro runs 13.1- they don't both run 12.7-12.8. The Mustang is faster, handles better, lighter, gets better mpg, cheaper, has a better interior/visibility. The numbers show that these cars aren't even close- no hair splitting going on here.

    • Corvette Guy says:

The 6-speed version of the Camaro SS WILL RUN in the 12's. It has the LS3 and is improved upon over the LS2 GTO which runs 13-13.1 with the LS2. You are comparing a 400hp variable displacement car instead of the manual transmission 436hp beast.

As far as the interiors go the GTO of 2004 to 2006 was nicer than the Camaro and is the dash in Mustang and the Camaro that really get me. Cheap as can be (as most are in this day and age) is what I see. For the price of each of these loaded up I can get a new left over Corvette 1lt, 2lt or even the 3lt which are all under 40k (yes you CAN get them for this price). The Mustang does entice me as does the Camaro. Each rock!

  13. Chris Pletcher says:

I hope Chevy will come out with a new model soon and step up their game.

  14. Ted says:

Corvette Guy is correct. Also note that the LS3 Camaros are 50 pounds lighter in addition to the 30 extra HP over the L99. It is common knowledge that the L99's are much slower stock. Additionally, the LS3 Physically weighs 30lbs less, has a more durable low end and obviously has much greater displacement at 6.2 liters than the new 5.0. Keep in mind that MANY people buy these cars based on potential more so than current performance. The LS motors have superior potential and are thus the top selling crate motors. 650 RWHP LS3's are somewhat common…without having cracked open the motor to change parts or the bottom end. That is not a common OEM trait.

  15. Riddick says:

It's not Ford's fault that they can offer a Mustang automatic with the same Horsepower and Chevy has to offer their automatic Camaro with 26 fewer ponies. Sounds like a problem for Chevy and a win for Ford. I mean what kind of engineering is that? So don't say it's not fair that the Camaro has less horsepower and the manual should race against the Mustang. Mustang auto vs Camaro auto, well the Mustang wins hands down.

The manual Mustang GT is also faster then the manual Camaro SS. Lets not forget that the Mustang V6 is also faster then the Camaro v6 even more so. The Mustang GT manual vs. Camaro SS manual is a decent race with the Mustang winning by a margin but the Mustang v6 vs. Camaro V6 is a slaughter as the Mustang is half a second quicker. Chevy really should have kept the Camaro on the drawing board a little longer because it's to much like a concept car with it's poor visibility and hot wheels look.

It's just sad that the Camaro is so huge in comparison yet has such a cramped interior. Having a small interior defeats the purpose of having a large car as a larger car should be spacious inside.

Ford has stopped trying to compete with the Camaro and stepped up to BMW. The new Motor Trend shows that the Mustang GT out runs the BMW on the drag strip, stops better, does better 8, better gas milage, keeps right with it in road couse and costs 30 grand less. The BMW only beat the Mustang GT by less of a 10th of a second at the road course. If they'd went at it again the Mustang might have beat the BMW a tenth of a second. Considering the road course is what a BMW M3 is designed for and the Mustang was side by side and the Mustang beat it in every other single category tells you who the winner is. However considering the Mustang costs 30 grand less it's still not a good comparison. Compare the 2011 Mustang GT-500 against the BMW and keep in mind the GT-500 costs over 10 grand less, has over 100 more horse power, destroys the Mustang GT in handling,0-60, quarter mile and you'd see that the GT-500 would have embarrassed the BMW M3.

All of that and Ford didn't take any bail out money! I used to be the biggest diehard Chevy fan and my first car was a 96 Z28 Camaro back in feb of 2001. I also owned a 2001 Camaro SS S-Speed and a 2008 Cobalt. I've decided that the best Muscle car between the 2011 Mustang GT and Camaro SS is the Mustang after research and test driving and I'll be purchasing one after my Christmas Bonus this year. I also recently purchased a modified 91 Mustang GT with 40,000 miles on it and it's putting 320 to the rear wheels with out a blower. Hopefully I'll be slapping one on it soon.

  16. Corvette Guy says:

Riddick my friend, you miss a few points. The reason Chevy has the auto being "tuned" conservative is for the gas guzzler tax. You should really read in to why the Mustang is faster, not just judge based on the blinder-eye vision that you have that all SS Camaros are slow. The factory de-tunes the engines very much so in the autos. That being said, the 6-speed SS is rated (and use this term loosely) at .1 seconds slower than the 5.0 6-speed. If you want to bring the GT500 in to the mix the Caddy CTS-V will beat it and it only has 6hp more and shhhh…..2 extra doors! Granted it is expensive but if you use a comment like "It costs more so it doesnt count." I could buy a Civic for 5k, drop 15k in to the engine, tranny, and suspension and mop your new 5.0 Holy Grail. But its not just about money is it?

This test does show the Ford winning. Good for you Ford, I actually have built myself a GT 6-speed, 3.73 rear geared, silver, non leather, on the Ford Web page. lol I like the car that much.

  17. Corvette Guy says:

Also Riddick, the 2001 SS you had was rated for mid 13s, many of them in stock form HAVE HIT 12s with just a driver MOD and your SS being that it had the revised cam, LS6 intake and SLP goodies and put you at 310ish hp at the wheels with 330ish tq.

Who cares about V6 versions, they are economy style cars not performance. Do you really want the hot looking girl who doesnt put out? No, you want the one that grunts, growls, and moans when you get in to it. :) Thats the SS and the 5.0. One thing a Mustang or a Camaro will never be is a BMW. No offense but Mustang and Camaro to 99% of the worlds population scream "Look at me! I have a mullet!' The BMW says class in ways a Camaro and Mustang cant. Who cares if the Mustang can keep with it? You really think a BMW owner is going to trade his BMW for a Mustang?

In this case though the SS and the 5.0 are evenly matched. 12.7 to 12.8 is what? 1/2 of a fender? I havent seen many 5.0s at the track even coming close to the 12.7 numbers. Most are in the 13s but that doesnt mean the cars CANT run that. Typical, people see 1 single test and base every fiber of their being upon it.

    • James M says:

I traded a basically NEW 335i (twiin turbo 6, sub 5 0-60) for an SS. That is, after I test drove 2 5.0s… They felt like a sedan mated with a sports car. Odd, something not right about it, sat too high and teh freakin steering wheel did not telescope! Just thoguht I would chime in there… yes, it does happen; I am the exception that proves the rule.

  18. shaggy says:

I just got a new GT, wow is all I can say. Never thought i would own a ford, but this is one incredible car.

  19. Corvette Guy says:

The 5.0 is a great car. It is high on my list of "next cars" to buy. :)

But now the Z28 is coming out so I guess we should take a look at that! So the Camaro will have the SS, Z28, and the bad boy, the ZL575 :)

Saw a nice silver 5.0 the other day, fell in love with the styling. ITs a sharp car no doubt.

  20. Corvette Guy says:

What rear end does the Camaro have (3.42 is my thinking) and I am betting Ford used the 3.73 option right? :)
I thought there was something a miss here!

  21. Corvette Guy says:

Noper, looks like its just a 3.23 rear for the Camaro.

Sorry boys but now we see how the Ford pulls. Equal gear will make things more interesting.

  22. sombershark says:

Surprise, surprise ! I picked up a '11 Mustang GT 5.0 auto ( wife cant & wont learn to drive stick : ( ) anyways, the stock auto gearing is a lowly 3.15, so no 3.73's in autos from the factory. Its not an issue of gears now.

  23. Corvette Guy says:

So web site folks. Did you put a 6-speed 3.73 geared Mustang against a numberically lower (yet actually a "higher" highway gear) Camaro SS automatic?

Not only have you picked on a car with LESS hp but you did so with steeper gears and a better transmission. You should be proud of the fact that you beat up on a lesser car and can post about it.

Perhaps I will bring out my ZX10 and run againt a Suzuki Katana 600 and point out the obvious. Fools, that is what believes what you folks put on the internet. Only a moron would think "Wow, the Mustang is THAT much faster." Give me a break. Biased, you are.

  24. WELLSNOOPY says:

The dealbreaker for me between the two is the fact that the mustang is coming in about 5000 dollars cheaper for the equivalent trim. That's a lot of money and the car looks and feels good — I drove it — may buy one. By the way I own an 08 Corvette so I know what I'm talking about. I do like my Corvette way better of course buy may add to my collection.

  25. Corvette Guy says:

How is that China made tranny holding up?

Is Ford going to opt to swap them for something a little better? Just curious as I actually drove a new 5.0 the other day and have to say I am close to getting the go ahead for it. :)

WELLSNOOPY, you have the best of both worlds. The new Camaro is a little over prices IMHO.

  26. Cassandra says:

U guys r losers cuz ur just JELOUS DAT MUSTANG BEAT UR STOOPID CAMARO!!!!!! My dads tia race her brother : 69 Ford Mustang Boss 302 (w? drag -pack opTion) vs. 70 chey camaro ss ! Da MUSTANG WON! SO HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH :D

  27. muscle car owner says:

It is very cute that alot of you so called gearheads are so easily fooled by obvious attempt to build up the 2011 5.0 mustang over the 2010-11 camaro ss. Well I am here to tell you that I think the stang is a very capable muscle car and they sound great. But after test driving one it is very clear that ford built a beautiful engine but it keeps up with the ss to 60 after that it is all over. For this very reason (among many) I purchased a 2010 camaro ss. Hey guys go out and really test drive these cars first before buying into the hype.

  28. Corvette Guy says:

Cassandra does not need a car. She needs to go to school and learn proper grammar and learn to spell. You are the reason America looks so bad to the rest of the world. I think you are in to cars, perhaps too much. Remember not to suck on the tail pipe.

Both cars are great and both have set backs. Looks like the 6-speed tranny issue is a few things. Hope they figure it out soon. A friend of mine just bought a V6 for his wife and its a fun little car.
