Ford GT vs. Ferrari 250 GTO

The Smoking Tire hits the Malibu Canyons with two hugely different, yet equally amazing cars: The 2006 Ford GT and the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. Modern horsepower meets vintage finesse in this beautiful drive in two of the best sports cars of all time.

Well done! Best episode yet! Driving those cars on Y.B. Road is the best tribute I can think of to the engineers who designed that stretch road back in the day. It's a shame California is too broke to keep the pavement in better condition.

If you find the right canyons, you can avoid some of the horrible bumps in some places. Las Flores, Decker, and Paiuma are particularly good stretches….

The sound of the Ford GT and Ferrari 250 GTO, is awsome. Wish i could record it so i can use it to fall a sleep with. Dream the dreams that car guys dream.

  • Jack Taylor

Sorry, that's not a Ferrari chassis, it's a fairly nicely done DATSUN replica.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/smokingtire smokingtire

The engine, frame, and driveline are From a 1968 365 GTB/4. I saw the stampings.

I love the Ford GT, I think it's a great car with good looks, amazing performance and lots of heritage and history…. BUT

personally, I think one of the best cars ever made in the US is the Saleen S7 (and TT)… and I still want to know why the hell Top Gear never had one on their show.

I don't know why you people keep trying to convince others that this was built off a Ferrari, I am part of a Datsun enthusiast site and we know our Datsuns and that is one. Weren't Ferrari's built off frames? then why would they have a rear shock tower which just happens to look exactly like a S30 Datsun's rear shock tower? And what about the rear tail light panel on the interior? Looks just like a 240z rear tail light panel to me. There are many points that prove this is a datsun with a Ferrari body kit. Just look at the placement of the windshield wipers, the curve of the doors, the roofline. Sure you say it is a "Frankenstein" of parts but why would someone use so many parts for a UNIBODY Datsun on a supposedly 365GTB, Sure the engine may be Ferrari, but the body is definably a Datsun. If you don't believe me check out the link I posted above.

This has been beaten to death, and I'm done with it. The car is represented accurately as a "frankenstein of parts" including an authentic Ferrari drivetrain.

      • Nathan

Then where are those engine pictures you promised us? and if it was a "Frankenstein of parts" why would it be a Datsun unibody and not the 365GTB (which doesn't even exist)? Its a Datsun unibody with a Ferrari 250 GTO body kit. Sure it may have a V12 but it is more likely that it is a L6 and you can't use the microphone on one side excuse. If you put a microphone on a Corvette with a LS1, one exhaust outlet isn't going to sound like a K20. Your an automotive show, you should have your facts straight and not try and convince everyone you were in a Ferrari when you were in a Datsun with a body kit. I am glad everyone loves the sound of a L6 so much because if you had the time to look it up on youtube you would notice a V12 sounds totally different then what is in your video. You have Ferrari guys and Datsun guys saying its a Datsun with a body kit and until we see pictures of the engine bay with some proof that they are from the same car ( You did promise us pictures) We will continue to push for the Truth. You can't base a show on lies, You will end up just like Top Gear.

Still waiting on that Ferrari Chassis #…………………..

  • Baker

Matt, this was a great show! overall a breath of fresh air with introducing the 250 and Ford GT. I learned allot, I will say this, I don't care if it's a datsun blah or not…the point here is- it doesn't matter because a car is only as good as it makes you feel. If that car feels and sounds awesome and its the closest thing to the 16 Million dollar equivalent with the same smile on your face then who cares?
Too many people get dorky about these things, The owner seems to enjoy his car, and he should! It's stunning.

    • Jdog

Baker – I think even the Datsun enthusiasts see this car as very nice – it IS a very nice AlphaOne conversion. We just REALLY wish the owner and The Smoking Tire would come clean already! We KNOW it's a Datsun. SHAME on you guys for claiming otherwise.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/smokingtire smokingtire

Said it before, and we'll say it again. It's a "frankenstein of parts" that includes an authentic Ferrari V12 drivetrain from the late 60's.

  • http://Ratsun.net '70 dime

Lets see the pictures of the "authentic Ferrari drivetrain." I just want to see this ended to prove all the nay sayers wrong.

  • Jack Taylor

__If the guy was smart, he should have stayed away from the Ferrari engine considering the performance and the "nothing sounds like a V-12" of the Datsun. Even if it was a Ferrari engine, which I sincerely doubt, sure looks like the guy spent a lot of extra $$$ and trouble. ____Either way, this guy is a mess and you let him pull it over on you. How could you possibly see the "stampings", yet never open th hood?. The guy says it's a Ferrari, yet a Frankinstein? Where's the Ferrari part of the Frankinstein? You're the one who fell for it, just say so! You're only killing your creditability.
