New Ford 5.0 Liter Crate Motor: Awesomeness To-Go

If you are a regular reader of The Smoking Tire, then you probably know what this is a picture of. It’s Ford’s new 5.0 Liter V-8 that was so generously provided as the power-plant for the new 2011 Mustang GT. The phrase “5.0″ is to Ford fans what “18 year old quintuplets” is to Hugh Hefner.

Combined with it’s exceptional build quality, Ford’s return to it’s king of motors means the new Mustang GT is a winner. But maybe you can’t afford a brand new Mustang GT (we can’t). Well thanks to it’s crate engine program, Ford will let you take home your very own 5.0 “Coyote” engine for only $6,999.

For 1/4 of the price of the new GT, Ford will send you a present that will hurt the UPS man’s back and make your neighbors scowl at the inevitable noise. And just because you didn’t buy the whole car doesn’t mean Ford isn’t sending you the whole engine. Same part number, same power, same “aw gee, you didn’t have to do that” stock supercharger pulley. But with 412hp and 390 tq., it has more than enough pull to keep you happy (and your neighbors pissed) for at least 2 weeks.

Crate engines are a great way to get big and reliable power. I rebuilt a Pontiac V8 when I was 17. The engine worked fine, but I wouldn’t have relied on it to drive to Maine and back. This engine was built by some of the best minds in the V8 business, giving you piece of mind. And with a project car of any kind, that is a priceless (and often rare) thing to have.

The real question is; Who will be the first to stuff this into a Fox Body Mustang? It’s the same size, and if Ford used some grey matter, it should bolt right in. Finding a cheap one isn’t hard, especially if you look for one with a blown motor. Then just jump to Ford Racing Parts and swipe your plastic. Now your 15 year old Mustang has all the power, technology and reliability of the latest one. Use that excuse to convince your significant other it’s a practical expense.

Im pretty sure the 5.0 was the power plant designed for the 2011 GT not the 2010. :)

I have a 2011 GT and its a damn blast! That motor has power pretty much everywhere. Most of it after about 2500rpm though. 3rd gear is what is loves

OK, Does anyone have the dimensions of this engine? Length? Maximum width? height from bottom of oil pan to top of intake manifold?
