The most common question I get (aside from requests to drive certain cars) is, “What is your favorite car of all time?” Well, obvious as it may be, it’s the McLaren F1 LM.
If there was ever a car that brings a sense of occasion to the driver, it’s definitely the McLaren F1 LM. Just look at the numbers: Total production of 5 cars. 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Top speed is drag limited at 225 mph, lower than the “normal” F1, but the acceleration and handling is better in the LM due to its 165 lb weight reduction. The BMW V12 makes 680 horsepower in LM trim (that’s 110hp per liter). This was all in 1995.
Nothing says “this car is for drivers,” like a seat in the middle. The starting sequence is would be familiar to a fighter pilot. It’s also wonderful that everything cocoons around you so that you really are master of all you survey. The cherry on top of this already wonder sundae is that it’s so hunkered down and race focused that you absolutely need headphones and microphones to protect your ears from the beautifully loud V12 and straight-cut gearbox, just so you could talk with your passenger. If we’re honest though, she’s (I wouldn’t prefer a guy passenger with me in my dream) going to have to be pretty special to be in your dream car. Plus it’s literally made of gold; how freaking awesome is that? Being a dream car though, I’m glad I’ll wake up before the costs come into play (even touch up paint is over $100). The F1 really is the definition and yardstick as to what will go into a dream garage. Now we just need a dream track to ourselves and all will be right with the world.

Nothing to say than I totaly agree !!
Great call been my fav since 95 and still nothing compares. Im still waiting to see one to make my life complete.
Has there ever been a car design that was executed so flawlessly? It has everything it needs and nothing more, the best car ever made. I completely agree.
That really is an amazing machine…
But I'm a simple guy. Give me a new 911 Turbo and I'm good.
strangely enough, the new 911 Turbo's engine and drivetrain is probably much more complicated than the F1's.
Lol.. good point.
I should rephrase, I'm more of a… uh? for lack of a better word: realist? in that my dream car is a readily available mass produced automobile rather than a lusty multimillion dollar limited production vehicle which most people will probably never even see in person in their lifetime.. but hey, I guess that's what makes it a DREAM car.. haha..
Still tho.. I love the 911 Turbo.. When I was younger I got to drive a 996 Carrera Tiptronic and I've been in love with Porsche's ever since..
My dream car: 911 Turbo with a Tech Art kit.. black, black rims with a chrome lip and a nice all white leather interior.
Porsche's are just such nice sporty luxurious yet surprisingly practical and easy to drive vehicles.. gotta love em.
I've had a poster of a yellow MF1 LM version since as long as I can remember. It quite literally is the coolest supercar yet. If money was no object there aren't many things I would enjoy more then to get behind the wheel of this marvelous machine.
PS. I believe your car is automatically bad ass if it has a sequential gear box. I've been wondering a lot lately why more cars don't have them?
the F1 doesn't have a sequential box. I don't know if you were trying to say it did, but it's a regular 6-speed. In the road cars, it's very standard, actually, and in the LM's there are no synchro's, which is why you need to wear the headphones when you drive them. The transmission makes a crazy whining noise.
This thing is so beautifully engineered. Its really one of those almost perfect things that man has created. Kind of like a Glock hand gun, or the Hoover Dam or something like that, I dunno. This thing just gives me goosebumps!
Lol @ the Glock comment..
Sound like R. Lee Ermey or something
Those things are sweet to shoot tho.. could squeeze off rounds all day long.
Me.. I'm more of a 1911 kinda guy. There's just something about a .45, haven't got my hands on a Glock 30 yet.. I'm eager to try that.
I'm nasty with a Glock 17…. but my favorite is the Baby Eagle .40 with the full size grip.
What I ment about the transmission thing is why don't cars have transmissions like motorcycles? On a bike you don't really need to use the clutch, just lift off a bit and pop it in. I'm sure it would be more reliable then straight cut gears (no synchros like the F1).
Anyone know why? A bike transmission seems pretty easy. 1 N 2 3 4 5 6. No gears to "miss" just go in order. Am I missing something? I saw a vid of a Caterham with a R1 motor or something and it was just so badass I thought of this.
