New Episode-The BMW 1M: The Last Drive

When we heard the BMW 1M was going to be at TST headquarters for a week, our right feet collectively salivated. It was one of the most anticipated cars of the year. That anticipation was fueled by the simple formula of 135i size+ M3 performance parts + more power – weight= super mega fun time. After driving it, we would describe it with phrases like “Sell my own mother for one.” or “I’m leaving in the 1M for Mexico at 4am. Who’s with me?” Matt took it to his favorite place-an empty canyon- to see if the past year’s hullabaloo was worth it.

Collectors car maybe, future worth $200K no. Why for the same reason the original M3 and M5 are not, they are booth buillt off a basic platform. Put the 1M against say a M6 and the M6 will be more desirable. Had BMW put a V8 under the hood and you would have a different story, horsepower still sales and is quickly becoming a luxury, the bigger the motor the more the car will be worth.

If the last-generation M6's reliability record is anything to go by, it will be significantly less desirable than the 1M. It's heavier, relies on (now) outdated technology, is uglier than the new version of the same car, and isn't limited production. It's a used car market for the M6, but there are slightly less than just enough 1M's to go around. That's a recipe for win.

Where is that road that Matt was driving the 1M? It looks awesome!

Damn good review. Have been waiting a while for this one

  • tom

you make better videos for this site than for the car show. carolla in charge makes you goof of too much i think, this is more serious and to the point = better

    • TheSmokingTire

carolla isn't in charge. He's an executive producer in name only. I'm glad you realized that the videos I produce are much better than the videos that hollywood makes.

Theres so much WIN in this comment. +1,000,000

In today's car market, last years cars are slugs, this years have better handling and more HP. This has been going on for the last 10 years. Collectible? No. But fun to drive and great looking yes. Reality check is required. Just look at all the Shelby mustang fans, 2007 is gone welcome 2012 Ford Boss 302.

Great video, that road is just made to punish. The alcantara interior was on the the 1M coupe Auto Express drove, I don't see why all of them don't have it.

  • Colin

    Man I'm jealous!
Just out of curiosity, if I kill you, and then kill myself, will I be reincarnated as the Matt Farah?

  • Colin

PS: do you think that maybe BMW got the inspiration for the shape and location of those (here, terrible) vertical bumper vents from the lines of the LFA?

  • Nader girgis

I like the 1m but I’ll never spend 85k for it and that’s what the dealears want for it we all like the car coz the MSRP was 46k and BMW make it for the yanger drivers to can try out an M car but that’s not what happen at all I did try to get one but there is no way to get it under 80k so you better of get a GTR

  • Nader girgis

    Great job Matt

  • Reid

Nice car,its not a aggresive car,its cute. You would look in your re view mirror and think thats a cute car but then when it rockets passed you will not think its so cute anymore.Kind of a baby that turns into a devil as soon as you put your foot on the gas.Nice review as well.If I had the money for a bmw that would be my car.

    Where's that road?

    • TheSmokingTire
