Holy Giant Tire Batman
By Zack Klapman
We’re not usually ones to re-print press releases, but when this picture showed up in the inbox, we all leaned in and said a curse word with a question mark at the end. That is a 21.5″ tire. It’s usually used to transport a family of four down a Swedish mountain (zero emissions people), this one is going on a heavily-modified Toyota Sequioa for SEMA. Toyota Racing is hosting a contest called Toyota Racing Dream Build, in which 4 teams do whatever they want to 4 Toyota vehicles. Kyle Busch is making a “Rowdy Edition” Camry, RKM Performance Center is making the “Trekked-Out Prius”, which has 45 feet of fiber optic cable, there’s a Pre Runner Tundra, and then there’s the “DragQuioa”, which is what that tire is for.
The “DragQuioa” will have 650HP from a TRD supercharged 5.7 Liter V8. I realize that 650HP isn’t a ton today, and that tire is certainly overkill, but builder Anton Brown is also taking 2,000lbs out of the car. It will still have passenger seats, and (presumably) a roof, so I’m very curious to see where he finds 2,000lbs to lose. Of course, this is SEMA, where things just have to look great through a computer screen, so perhaps the body will be made of lightweight plastic a la a Pro Street drag car or something. However he does it, the truck will be quick, loud, and look like a beast. Seeing someone mount a tire the size of a junior sumo wrestler has me very interested in how the rest turns out.
