[video] Mustang. 3 turbos. 5.6s 1/8th mile. Diesel
By Zack Klapman
A few months ago on our podcast, “the mole” asked how we would feel about a light, diesel-powered sports car. I thought it was a great idea, if they can keep the weight down over the front end. Diesel gives you torque and efficiency that’s hard to match with a small displacement gasoline engine. But since the amount of time between theorizing future production cars on our podcast and cars arriving in dealerships is as yet undetermined, it will probably be a while.
Or you can shoe-horn a Cummins motor into your old Mustang, like this guy did. It was tough finding information on this car, but we know it ran the 1/8th mile in 5.63 seconds @ 132MPH. Using a Wallace Racing ET calculator, that’s like running the 1/4 in 8.93. According to the periodic table, that’s “fast as shit.” It’s a spectacle, as it sits billowing soot like an enraged locomotive, and then BANG, it’s gone. The best part of the whole thing is the car’s nickname, the “CumStang.” Brilliant. Jump to watch.
To look at another great diesel Mustang, look at Nitrous Express CEO Mike Wood’s. He took it on Hot Rod Drag Week, and averaged a 9.91 at 142.91MPH. That gave him the win in the diesel class (against 4 trucks), and he would have won the gas class too (The organizers wouldn’t put him there because they didn’t think he had a chance.).
