Watch DRIVE’s Amazing Tour of the McLaren Factory (video)
by Zack Klapman
If you like cars or racing, you know the name McLaren. Your mind might instantly bring up a picture of the famous F1 super car. Or maybe one of their many F1 cars. Their 40 year-old name is as synonymous with fast cars as gasoline. The F1 is on of the best cars ever made, and it’s performance is still equal to-or greater than-the highest priced hyper-beasts of today.
That was as much as I knew about McLaren: made the F1, good at F1. But then I watched DRIVE‘s tour of their factory, and now I understand wby they’re so good. The 22-minute video gives a detailed look at the factory, and through that you come to understand why their cars do what they do. You see the level of attention that goes into everything they touch; they made all the storage bins the same diameter, hid every power cable, hand-buff each car, and intentionally provide the absolute best working environment (expecting only the absolute best from their employees in return). I bet if you go in the bathroom, all the paper unrolls the same direction.
The tour is set to a sound track that makes you feel like a Wonka Golden Ticket holder. This isn’t “How It’s Made”, or “Inside the World’s Band-Aid Factory” and thank god, because who cares about that crap anyway? This is a beautiful, detailed, artistic look at one of the greatest automotive creators ever to exist. Enjoy.
