Watch & Hear a McLaren P1 Test Mule [video]

Back in September when the McLaren P1 concept was revealed, Matt broke down the car’s design, and gave a brief history lesson its predecessor, the godfather of super cars, the McLaren F1. McLaren told everyone that the production car would retain 95% of the concept’s design, which is absolutely fine with us. Now it’s been confirmed, by some photographers from WorldCarFans, who happened to be at the same gas station as a P1 test mule. What are the odds? They watched it leave, then followed it around some curvy pass for a bit, getting more footage of the curvaceous Brit. Even camouflaged, the curves of the rear have a cartoonishly extreme sex appeal, like Jessica Rabbit, or Coco.

 

McLaren hasn’t released the engine specs, but to our ears it sounds like a V8. And, since it’s McLaren, it will probably be the fastest thing around a racetrack short of a Zonda R. Who knows, who cares. It’s sexy, it sounds good, and it’s now on video. Make the jump to watch.

    This is one of the best looking cars I've ever seen. Love the sound, do think that the F1 sounded better, but this thing is beautiful. I'm guessing it's a twin turbo 4 cam V8 that puts out just above or just under 700 horsepower with ~540-560 something foot pounds of torque.

    I recall Tiff and Jason Plato saying they prefer the 458 to the MP4-12C so hopefully Mclaren makes the car feel more organic to drive and less like a computer program. Did Gordan Murray design the P1? Mclaren to me has always been a bit too surgical and clinical in their approach to building cars so hopefully that isn't the case with this new super car.

    It looks like the guys driving weren't even acknowledging the guys with the camera, which has to be pretty rare as companies don't usually like their unfinished new projects being touted on the web. I reckon that either McLaren made this video or they were pretty complicit in it, either way I'd love to hear this thing getting hooned, it sounds amazing even at low revs.

    Cool car. But is every one going to be wrapped like that?

      I hope you're kidding…. it's a pre-production prototype, so the engineers drive them around with zebra wrap which makes it harder for spy photogs to capture what the car actually looks like.
