In the May Issue of Road Lanes, Matt Reviews the Camaro ZL-1, Panamera Turbo S, and Three New Fords!

Monday, April 9th, 2012

For those who haven’t yet subscribed, Matt writes many reviews for Road Lanes, an online magazine chock full of new car reviews. In this month’s issue, Matt pretty much takes over, writing reviews on the new 580-horsepower Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 as tested at Virginia International Raceway, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S (which you will also see  video on The Smoking Tire coming soon), the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, and three Fords that have been updated for 2013, including the Flex, Taurus SHO, and Mustang GT.

You can subscribe to Road Lanes here, and it will be delivered to your inbox every month. If you like Matt’s writing, you’ll get a shitload of it here. Leave your comments about the cars reviewed as well (since Road Lanes doesn’t have comments).

**Side note – I have gotten several emails from people who have subscribed to Road Lanes, but are not receiving issues. If that’s the case, please leave a comment here and I’ll make sure that the editors over there know about it.

Stolen Porsche Taunts Police, Then Crashes

Monday, April 9th, 2012

by Zack Klapman

The largest balls on the East coast were recently spotted in Methuen, Ma., stuffed inside a Porsche that was spinning in a police parking lot. Sometime before 2:00AM, a Porsche 911 (along with a ’99 Mercedes and a Land Rover) was stolen from a repair shop. The thief then drove to a police station, pulled into the parking lot, and did donuts. Stupid, but I admit, I want to do that. But as you’ll read, this guy is on another level of impulsive stupidity. I’m thinking when he was in the womb, his balls got the blood that was supposed to go to his brain, creating a legendarily brave idiot.  (more…)

Jaguar to Make that Gorgeous Coupe. Also, Water Remains Wet

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

by Zack K

Here’s some completely expected news: Jaguar announced they’re going to build the F-Type,the production car based on the CX-16 concept. Shocking. Whodathunkit. This did not need announcing. The CX-16 concept was so pretty I felt like Betty Draper discovering the joys of reading on top of an active clothes dryer. It was a stunning concept, journalists and public alike went nuts, so they built it. Pretty simple formula, really. (more…)

by Zack K

Chevy released the pics and stats of what the new Impala will be. (To answer your inevitable question; I have no idea if there will be an SS version.) So far, it seems right for its market.

TST Podcast Ep. 12: Alex Roy and Micah ‘Bam Bam’ White

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

It’s Episode 12 of The Smoking Tire Podcast. We have two guests on this one: Alex Roy and comedian Micah ‘Bam Bamm’ White. Alex Roy is Gumball veteran, driving multiple rallies in his Team Polizei M5. He holds the record for fastest drive across the USA, which he documented in a great book, “The Driver.” He’s a long-distance rally driver of the highest degree, and now hosts “Live and Let Drive” on YouTube’s DRIVE network. He talks about speeding, Morgans, too many movies and  has some of the best cop stories you’ve ever heard.

But wait, there’s more. Micah “Bam Bam” White. He’s been killing it on the road, back from Hawaii and currently performing in NYC.  He continues to learn about cars through Zack’s laptop, and tells us a great story about a special Ford promotion that only he knew about. (more…)

TUNED Season 1 Finale

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

It’s the final show for Season 1 of “Tuned” on YouTube’s Drive network. (Don’t worry, we’ll be back in July.) Over the season the channel was flooded with questions and comments, good and bad. So, for this episode, Matt decided to sit down and address the most common, or notable, from each episode. So grab a beer and hit ‘play’, or if you aren’t old enough, three 5 Hour Energy drinks. Actually don’t do that. (please please please don’t do that, you’ll die and sue us). Enjoy, and we’ll see you in July. (more…)

Mint 400 Crash at 96 MPH

Friday, March 30th, 2012

It's bad when the hood is at a 90 degree angle from the horizon.

by Zack K

Last weekend was the annual Mint 400, a race through the hot, desolate planet known as Nevada. It’s a gnarly race;  4 laps on a 92-mile course covered in sharp rocks and thick silt. It’s the Baja 1000 but shorter and without cocaine-covered AK47s. It’s been going on so long Steve McQueen ran it; a contributing factor to his resume smelling like lava, and Marilyn Monroe’s desk chair.

This year Robby Gordon won it (click for highlight video with dated electronic music). Props to Robby, who won by only 3 minutes. His highlight reel is cool, but the best video I found is the truck from Big Ugly Racing rolling at 96MPH. Thanks to safety gear and magic, drivers Kevin Sacalas and Bryan Bigsby walked away without serious injury. Amazing, considering they were rolling long enough to write this post. Jump to watch.

TST Podcast Ep. 11 w/ Bill Caswell and Wyatt Knox

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

What’s up everyone, sorry for the delay but episode 11 of The Smoking Tire Podcast is now up. This week our guests were Bill Caswell and his co-driver, Wyatt Knox. If you don’t know, Bill Caswell is a self-taught racing driver, mechanic, and fabricator. He got famous (on the internet) by taking a $500 Craigslist BMW to WRC Mexico in March of 2010. He just finished racing the Mint 400 in Nevada, after retro-fitting said BMW with big, knobby, 4×4 tires. It’s quite rad, if I do say so myself.

Wyatt is a part-time instructor at the Tim O’Neil Rally school, and was the the 2011 Rally America FWD Champion.  How he can comfortably ride shotgun while Bill, a “self-taught race car driver” barrels along on Mexican cliffs, I have no idea. Together they are misfits of motoring, traveling the country, welding in the middle of the night, experiencing some of the craziest moments we’ve ever heard. I envy their drive, know-how, and who-gives-a-fuck-edness. We will have them back soon, provided they are alive. Jump to listen.
