How Matt Almost Won the Ford Octane Academy Invitational, But Didn’t.

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Vaughn Gittin Jr., Tanner Foust, Matt, Ken Block, and Brian Deegan

The Ford marketing department’s pimp game has been especially tight in the last couple of years. And I should know, as I, despite my journalism street cred, have been a part of it more than once. Back at our old show, Garage419, we were offered one of the “Fiesta Movement” cars for 6 months, which we turned down, because we didn’t feel like filming the same car over and over for half a year. Nevertheless, the Fiesta Movement was a huge success, leading to millions of minutes of online video coverage promoting their new small car. A year ago, I took part in the Ford Focus Rally, essentially a version of “The Amazing Race” by the same producers, except instead of public transportation we drove 7,000 miles in Ford Focus Titanium’s. (For the record, yes I got paid to participate, which is why I will not review the new Focus). It was a reality show on the surface, but more likely a not-so-subtle month-long commercial for the Focus, as many of the car’s features were integrated into challenges. This brings us to Ford’s newest plan: The Octane Academy. It’s a chance for young, aspiring action sports athletes to compete against each other, on television, while under the patient guidance of four of today’s hottest motorsports stars.

For some reason, (I’m guessing it’s because I had to drive 7,000 miles with the cruise control set to 60 on the Focus Rally) Ford decided I should be included in their Media Invitational, and even be allowed to drive fast on their test track while competing against 19 other journalists for the Octane Academy Invitational Gold Medal (no shit, they had medals.) And I almost won, but, as usual, screwed myself. It’s a long story, but don’t worry, I made it extra awesome for you. Hit the jump to read on.

Bullrun 2011 – There is Video After All! (UPDATED)

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Hey everyone! We know it’s been a little quiet here around The Smoking Tire for the last ten days, and there is a good reason for it. While Zack has been working behind the scenes at The Car Show (Wednesdays at 10ET/7PT), Matt was off on the Bullrun Rally with Rob from SuperSpeeders, and Tom was part of the MTV film crew that was filming the whole event. Now, for those of you who follow Matt on Facebook or Twitter, you’ll know that we weren’t filming the rally this year like other years, because Matt wanted to just be on vacation, and to be honest, Black Magic wasn’t exactly jumping to throw money at us after our 12 tickets last year.

But that doesn’t mean Rob wasn’t filming this year. And although the coverage isn’t as complete as when we filmed in 2010, and it doesn’t have all those awesome Black Magic commercials not-so-stealthily integrated into the video, we’re pretty sure that you will get the idea of how this year’s rally went. Hit the jump to ride along with Team Super Speeders, Matt and Rob, in the 2000 Mustang Cobra R!

** Matt wasn’t in the “Day 1″ video because he was finishing up taping The Car Show and shows up at the beginning of day 2. But watch day 1 anyway to learn a fun fact about Rob!

UPDATED: Now with Day 7 video.

Confirmed: Matt’s Going on Bullrun, and Driving This

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

It’s that time of year again, Bullrun time! I wasn’t sure if I was going to actually do the rally this year, for several reasons, the biggest of which is that no one is offering to pay me to do the rally, which is kind of a bummer. But let’s look at the bright side of things: I have a good-paying TV job now, I won’t have to be on camera so much, so I can get as drunk as I want every night, and I won’t have to hawk any products to cops who have pulled me over. Sounds pretty awesome, right?

Video – Fast5: What is the Ultimate Heist Vehicle?

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

In Fast 5, the latest installment in the Fast and the Furious movie franchise, Brian and Dom are trying to pull off the ultimate heist, which requires the ultimate heist vehicle. In the film, they choose Dodge Charger cop car look-alike’s, not a bad choice if you ask me. But is there something better? Matt and Fireball Tim Lawrence host a contest at Willow Springs Raceway inviting all comers to bring their metal and see how their car stacks up as the ultimate heist vehicle. Featured cars include: Gintani X5M, M5, C63 AMG, CLK 63 AMG Black Series, Nissan GTR, Supercharged Mustang GT, and more, plus the actual Nissan 370z from the movie Fast 5 and several professional racing drivers. Hit the jump for the video to see how it all went down and who came out on top.

They both have seating for 4 people. They both have a bevy of luxury options available. They are both upgraded versions of other cars (Nissan 370Z and Mustang GT). And they are both optimized for street performance and comfort. Furthermore, their MSRP’s are within $2,000 of each other. How does Roush’s take on the critically acclaimed Mustang GT compare to Japan’s most popular Sports Coupe? Hit the jump to find out.

Ebay Find of the Day: Are You Crazy, or Just Stupid Edition?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Ever wish you could go back to 1994 and buy a like new Ford Mustang Cobra?  (No? Me either. – ed) Though this may not be a dream for a lot of people, the Mustang is our eBay find of the week.  What evidently makes this particular Mustang worth its asking price of $39,900, is the fact that it was an Official PPG Cart Series Pace Car.  It has just 3,800 miles and it is finished in an umm… interesting shade of sea foam green.  This body style isn’t the most sought after today, but you have to remember that this was the first year for replacing the oh so 80s fox body style.  In 1994, there were only 1,000 Cobra Convertibles, and all were finished in red.  This car was provided directly from the factory for PPG to produce a limited edition Cart Series Pace Car.  If you were wondering what the powertrain in this beast is, it is of course the five-oooh (well 4.9).  In this application, it has 240-hp and a 5-speed manual.  0-60 is a blazing 6.9 seconds and the quarter mile is just over 15 seconds.  It’s crazy to think that currently, even the V-6 mustang has more power than this top of the line mustang, from just over 15 years ago.  This is a true testament to how much automotive engineering has improves over a few years.

When you take a look at the option list for the standard 1994 Convertible Cobra, you will also appreciate how nice cars are today.  Some of the options were: air conditioning, illuminated entry, cruise control, CD player, rear window defroster, and remote keyless entry.  These are all standard features a majority of the cheapest cars available today.

When it’s all said and done, the best thing about this car is how much this color and body combo would stand out on the road.  It’s also safe to bet that this Mustang sounds like a proper V-8 Mustang and it should hold it’s value, due to the rarity.  This could be one of those cars that you could see on Barret-Jackson in 10-20 years and say, wow, I could have bought that car for under 40 grand back in the day.
