Co-driver Can’t Keep Up

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

"Crest.." "Uh, we're already in the air. Can you talk faster?"

by Zack K

This video from The Daily Hoon is pretty funny. It’s a WRC special stage rally with an unknown driver. The driver is hauling ass through this twisty tarmac stage, and the co-driver just can’t keep up. The guy urges her to speed up several times. He’s practically driving the course without notes, and that makes his crazy speed even more impressive. 4km in, their coms stop working, so she has to shout the notes and she sounds exactly like Rachel Dratch doing that weird, Eastern European accent. You could turn this into a drinking game: how many times does she call out the corner and he’s already in it? Grab a bottle and hit the jump. (more…)

Video: Matt Races Bucky Lasek in Rally Cars on TUNED!

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

If you haven’t been following our new series Tuned on the /DRIVE Network, you’ve been missing out. We started by romping on BBi Autosport’s Porsche Turbo S, then moved on to crusing Grant’s Pass, Oregon in the amazing Decoliner RV by Blastolene. This week, we made it to the Dirtfish Rally School in Snoqualmie, WA, where we learned about rally car building and preparation, while Matt got to race six-time X-Games Gold Medalist Bucky Lasek.

Bucky, much more well known for skateboarding than for cars, isn’t exactly an easy takedown. He spends his weekends at the track club racing his modified Porsche 996 Turbo. He has raced Porsche cup cars at Sebring, Daytona, and all over southern California. And his skateboarding background means he’s used to pushing the limit. But when it comes to rally cars, he has the same 2 days of experience that Matt does. The race is closer than you’d think, but who will win? Hit the jump to find out.

New Episode- Co-Driving a Rally (video)

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Rally racing is like swimming in a cage surrounded by great white sharks. Adrenaline is high the entire time and the only thing preventing you from absolute death is a bunch of metal tubing welded up by some dude name Fia. I think it’s the truest test of car control, skill and flat out balls. It’s also one of the only forms of racing where there’s two people in the car. The co-driver’s job is just as essential as the driver. His notes can not only be the difference between victory or defeat, it can also be the deciding factor between rolling down a hill, playing human pachinko with your car. It’s a symbiotic relationship of direction and action.

Our director and DP, Tom Morningstar, has started co-driving for John Burke in his Up Two Mountains Rally Team Subaru STI. The first time he did was at the Desert Storm rally, and they got 3rd. This time though, part of the rally would be at night. Tom was a little nervous the night before, as would anyone who is about to go sliding around un-protected corners at night, with someone else driving. See what happens in the latest episode of The Smoking Tire.

Do You Really Need a Truck? Really?

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

A weekend camping trip with the guys, what could be better? Fresh air, fire, s’mores, guns, fire, star gazing, fishing, fire. Did I mention fire? Of course, all this burning required that we find a spot far from other campers and off the beaten path. What happens though, when you deviate from time-tested trucks and instead bring a more subdued vehicle to do your off-roading?  Do you still need a truck to do all the fun things you want to do? Hit the jump to find out.

Sometimes, when we film The Smoking Tire, we drive really, really fast while shooting on-board footage. Here’s a compilation of some of our favorite shots. It doesn’t matter who was driving, as long as it’s not Matt or Tom, which, obviously, it never was. Video after the jump.

How Not to Tow, and How Not to Be Towed.

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Kids, a short lesson in towing. When you’re the car being towed, you should probably turn on the accessory to unlock the steering wheel. When you’re the car towing, you may want to look behind you from time to time.

Thanks, Patrick for the tip!

Stage 2 WRX to the Rescue!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

This video has been circulating the internet at lightning speed, and for good reason. It’s European-Spec STI towing a stuck 18-wheeler out of some ice.  It may get 24mpg, and the exhaust won’t save any whales, but this little sedan just raised the bar of what a turbo-4 cylinder, AWD can really do. And people say STIs aren’t practical cars. Good thing he wasn’t towing out a cop in CA, they would have thanked him, and then cited him for having modified exhaust.

Jon Gosselin Tries to Trade in M3: Fails Miserably

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

OK, I read TMZ. I like celeb trash sometimes, so deal with it. I especially like it when celebrities, a great percentage of which are morons, think their cars are worth more simply because they have owned them. This is common, even by normal non-celebrity standards, as every car is worth more to its current owner than it is to anyone else. Drive a $130,000 Maserati Quattroporte off the lot with a smile? To you, it’s still worth $130,000. To anyone else, it’s now worth $100,000 maximum, simply because your fat ass sat in the seat for a few miles, and signed some paperwork.

Jon Gosselin, who just realized he has to pay at least $10,000 A MONTH! in child support for his 8 kids, tried to make a quick buck by trading in his 2005 M3 (AKA, the guidomobile) for a 2008 Subaru STI plus about $4,000 in pocket for him. Not surprisingly, the dealer wasn’t buying. Maybe he could rent it out by the day to paparazzi?
